POKER DOGS: A BOLD BLUFF: In 1903 C. M. Coolidge was commissioned to produce 16 paintings for the advertising firm of Brown & Bigelow. All the paintings in the series feature dogs performing human activities. His poker playing dogs are the most famous, but he also painted dogs on a commuter train and in a ballpark. This piece is called "A Bold Bluff." Here were have a St. Bernard with a weak hand making a very bold bluff at the poker table while the other dogs look on! The painting is actually Part 1 of a 2 Part painting of a poker game!It should be noted that this painting recently surpirsed the art world when it sold, along with "Waterloo," (Part 2) for $590,400. The day before the auction, the New York Sun wrote that it was predicted to bring in $30,000 to $50,000.
